Babban Singh had killed Narsimha's wife and son, and cut off his fingers, as a revenge for sending him to jail and killing his brother. Heerendra and Raj agree to take up the task for a hefty reward, and move to Kaliganj, where Babban Singh terrorizes the villagers. There, they meet and fall in love with two women, Ghungroo (Sushmita Sen), an auto-rickshaw driver, and Durga (Suchitra Krishnamoorthi), a widow of Narsimha's son.
Heerendra and Raj manage to locate Babban Singh's hideout during Diwali, but he escapes after a fierce gunfight. Trivia
The film was originally titled Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay, but the makers of Sholay filed a lawsuit against Varma for violating their trademark and intellectual property rights. Varma then changed the title to Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, which is a pun on his initials RGV and the Hindi word for fire.
The film was also supposed to feature Nisha Kothari as Ghungroo's sister Champa, but her role was cut from the final version.
The film features a cameo appearance by Abhishek Bachchan, who is the son of Amitabh Bachchan. Abhishek plays a gypsy singer who sings a parody of the song "Mehbooba Mehbooba" from Sholay. The original song was picturized on Amitabh Bachchan and Helen.
The film also features a cameo appearance by Urmila Matondkar, who is a frequent collaborator of Varma. Urmila plays Mehbooba, a dancer who performs on the same song as Abhishek Bachchan. Urmila had earlier played the role of Basanti in Varma's spoof film Daud (1997), which was also inspired by Sholay.
The film was shot in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Nashik. The film's climax was shot at the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where a replica of Kaliganj was created.
The film's music was composed by Ganesh Hegde and Prasanna Shekhar, while the background score was composed by Amar Mohile. The film's soundtrack album consists of six songs, out of which four are remakes of the songs from Sholay.
